The Origins of Muay Thai

Muay Thai (aka Thai Boxing) was founded by generations of the "Thai race" or Thai people, who had migrated southward from China, into the Mae Kong and Chao-praya regions in order to join the other Thai race who already co-existed with several other races of people in that region of the world, such as Khom, Lawa, and Morhn. Conflict between races, or nations gradually brought about the development of fighting system along with the usage of weapons of war.

One of Muay Thai′s most famous events took place in 1774 during war between Thailand & Burma. When the Burmese captured a prisoner of war named Nai (Mr.) Kanom-tom who was a Muay Thai master. The Burmese king forced Kanom-tom to fight the current Burmese Champion who Kanom-tom dispatched of violently using all 8 limbs of his Muay Thai arsenal. Moments later he was forced to fight 9 other top Burmese fighters in individual fights with no time limits and no rest periods until one fighter could no longer stand... all to gain his freedom. He easily defeated all 10 opponents to the amazement of all. The date was March 17, 1774. Now we commemorate Muay Thai on March 17 of every year.

There are many archeological findings, such as stone reliefs, found on the walls of old Buddhist temples that support the theory of Muay Thai being practiced long before medieval time. Muay Thai
has been called "the art of nine body parts", meaning the use of
two hands, two elbows, two knees, two feet.
The ninth part of the body is the head, both figuratively (one′s intelligence) and practically (head butt).
But actually Muay Thai employs every part of one’s body, as still seen in the learning of Muay Boran, the traditional form of Muay Thai.

Muay Thai today is an extremely effective style of fighting and is also a very popular
ring sport & is the national sport of Thailand. The most famously
known venues being Lumpini and Rajadamnern stadiums in Bangkok.
Muay Thai events are now held worldwide. Muay Thai also plays a pivotal
role in Mixed Martial Arts such as UFC, PRIDE & K-1 kickboxing
among others. It is considered
one of the worlds most fearsome and effective striking styles, its intense &
effective training sharpens & disiplines the mind and transforms the body.
